Start up the time machine
The quad’s packed, everyone in their spot. Skaters in baggy jeans and Airwalks, Blink-182 burnt onto their CDs. Girls are rocking a laid-back edgy vibe, crop tops, slip dresses layered over tees, flared jeans, platform sneakers, butterfly clips, and chokers. The surfers have sun-bleached tips, smelling like sunscreen and saltwater, still buzzing from dawn patrol. The desert kids roll in with lifted trucks, revved up to hit the backroads after school, dust-bound and bass-heavy. The goth crew chills under the trees—head-to-toe black, Docs, eyeliner—quiet but impossible to miss. Cheerleaders and varsity players are hyped for homecoming, school spirit running high. Someone rented Scream from Blockbuster, Sublime’s blasting, windows down. Nsync, Christina Aguilera, No Doubt and Britney Spears on mtv.
